Cultural Cooperation and Public Diplomacy
Like in other areas of cooperation, the cultural ties between Korea and Bangladesh are gaining momentum as well. There are regular visits of cultural troupes from both the countries under Cultural Exchange Programme. Bangladesh and ROK renewed the Cultural Exchange Programme for the period 2019-2023 during the visit of the former Korean Premier H.E. Mr.Lee Nak-yon to Bangladesh in July 2019.
Building of permanent ‘Shaheed Minar’
In 2017, a permanent Shaheed Minar was built at Multicultural Park in Ansan with the active support and cooperation of the Ansan City Corporation. Which is an epitome of strong and growing cultural ties between the two countries.
Bangladesh Embassy participates in various cultural events in cooperation with Korean organizations to bring the sights and sounds of Bangladesh to the Korean people, which are as follow:
Migrants Arirang Multicultural Festival (MAMF):
Bangladesh has been a regular participant in the Migrants Arirang Multicultural Festival (MAMF). Bangladesh was selected as the ‘Country of Honour’ in the 2017 event and participated with a 50 member cultural troupe from Bangladesh led by Mr. Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, Hon’ble Cultural Minister, Besides, Bangladesh placed first in the rally competition during the event.
Seoul Friendship Fair:
Seoul Friendship Fair is one of the largest multicultural festivals of Korea. The annual event is held in Seoul. Various cultural programs are showcased in the event, including traditional performances, traditional foods from different nations, an international costume show etc. Bangladesh Embassy regularly participates in the Fair with food and craft stalls. Bangladesh also displays its rich cultural heritage through participating in the cultural event.
Itaewon Global Festival:
Itaewon Global Festival is an event that combines the Korean traditional culture and foreign culture. The event takes place at Itaewon, a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic area in Seoul every year. The people get to enjoy various culture exchanges and food exhibitions, colourful multi-cultural parades etc. Bangladesh Embassy displays traditional craft items in its booth which attracts a large crowd every year. The Embassy also regularly participates in the cultural performance and parade.
Bangladesh Film Festival
The Embassy organizes Bangladeshi film festivals to showcase Bangladeshi culture amongst the Korean audience through its cinema. The Festival attracts a huge number of Korean audiences besides the Bangladeshi expatriates. Bangladesh Embassy in Seoul organized Bangladesh Film Festivals respectively on 20-22 July 2018 and on 11-13 June 2019 in Seoul. Bangladesh Embassy also organized screening of the film ‘Hasina: A Daughter’s Tale’ for the diplomat corps in Seoul at Lotte Cinema on 22 September 2019.
Visit Bangladesh program
Journalists from major media houses of Korea and scholars have been participating in the Visit Bangladesh Programme since 2018. Their write-ups have been helpful in creating a positive image of Bangladesh in the ROK.
Embassy Donates Rickshaw to the Yongsan City Mayor’s Office and to the Multicultural Museum
The Embassy of Bangladesh in Seoul has donated two Bangladeshi Rickshaws as gifts to the Korean authorities as part of its public diplomacy initiative. The first one was handed over to H.E. Mr. Sung Jang-hyun, the Mayor of the Yongsan City on 9th December 2019. The Embassy also donated Bangladeshi traditional clothes-saree and Panjabi, to the office of the Mayor. The second Rickshaw was handed over to the Director, Multicultural Museum in Seoul so that the visitors could learn about the cultural tradition of Bangladesh.
